3 day workshop June 14-16 2019 .jpg

LEVEL UP intermediate level

(student should be comfortable shooting in manual mode)

3-day WORKSHOP is designed to teach the hobbyist photographer how to take their photography to the next level.

DATES: June 13-14-15, 2019 (Thurs-Fri-Sat) Class time 6-9 p.m.

Schedule:

1st class Thursday June 13th Auto focus modes. Learn which focus mode is best to get sharp images in different scenarios. Emphasis on moving subjects such as kids and sports.

2nd class Friday June 14th Metering modes. DSLR cameras have an internal light meter that automatically measures the reflected light and determines the optimal exposure. The most common metering modes in digital cameras today are:

  1. Matrix Metering (Nikon), also known as Evaluative Metering (Canon)

  2. Center-weighted Metering

  3. Spot Metering

Understanding how metering works and what each of the metering modes do is important in photography, because it helps photographers control their exposure with minimum effort and take better pictures in unusual lighting situations like snow, at the beach and landscape photography.

if time allows = Note: I will demonstrate how to use fill flash with a speed light when photographing a back lit image (sun behind your subject) but you do not need to have a speed light for this class.

Learn about exposure compensation: When using the semi auto modes Aperture Priority AV or Shutter Priority TV and Program P you can use the exposure compensation to alter the exposure making the photo brighter or darker allowing the photographer to get the photo they want.

White balance and why it is important. The color of a subject is effected by the lighting condition. Sunlight, overcast skies, indoors with incandescent and fluorescent bulbs will make a difference in the colors of your photo. Understanding which white balance to choose is important.

FUN STUFF I will show you how to properly use a reflector! Yes there is actually a correct way to effectively use a reflector.

3rd class Saturday June 15th FIELD TRIP Zoom burst photography. MUST BE COMFORTABLE SHOOTING IN MANUAL MODE

I will teach zoom burst or zoom blur photography. This technique is incredibly FUN. You will zoom your lens in and out while the shutter is open producing creative blur or exaggerated movement in your image. Things you will learn: manual focusing, using a tripod, drag the shutter, using the internal timer and or a shutter release. A telephoto lens 18-55 will work great.

GEAR NEEDED:

Camera and telephoto lens an 18-55 (or equivalent 17mm-50mm or 55mm ) kit lens will work great. You just need to be able to zoom in and out. If you have other telephoto lenses that is great! You will get more blur or exaggerated movement with a larger zoom lens. (70mm-300mm, 18-200mm, 100-400mm or the equivalent)

A sturdy tripod (especially if you want elements in focus)

shutter remote release (the shutter remote release is around $10 on amazon)and OR I will show you how to use the cameras internal timer

ND filter (an ND filter is not needed for this class, but it is fun to know how to use them and an inexpensive one is around $20 - $30 on amazon depending upon your lens mm)
